sustenance

I have watched my
grandmother butcher, pull
free the heart from the
restraining body. I have
watched and so I know that
you do not kill for the heart
you kill for the body--the
substance which it offers.
The heart, then, is only one of
the untidy organs pulled out
and fed to the cats. Though
gorged crimson red full of
blood, its taste is repugnant
and heavy.
